Be a Light on Campus This Summer!

Campus Light Exchange

IMB job #: 26827
Location: Southeast Asia
Team size: Team of 6
Field expense: $2,372 plus round trip airfare & required travel insurance

Job description: Spend the summer living on a college campus where 98% of students do not know Jesus. You will go to language & culture classes as part of an exchange program and spend the afternoon & evenings building relationships and sharing the Gospel over great food, tea, sports, English clubs, and student outings. You will live on campus and have the opportunity to build deep relationships with students, many of whom have never had anyone explain the Gospel to them. Student will also be tasked with encouraging any believing students at the university in their walk with the Lord and outreach to the lost.

Student Testimony from 2022:
"I was in a place with little to no Christians and many people had never heard the Gospel. If they did know about Jesus, it was a twisted version of the story. I came to see that the lostness was so significant and the need for laborers is so great. I also began to better understand the power of prayer—I saw God answer prayers many times."

God is Always at Work Around You

Thailand was amazing! Building relationships and working with Thai students was both exciting and challenging for me.

My time in Thailand has shown me, once again, that God is already at work in many people’s hearts. It is our job to be willing to let the Holy Spirit lead and be faithful to the command of the One who is always faithful.

Teaching and Praying

Working at a preschool for one month in Southeast Asia was amazing. I had an opportunity to pray for the students no one else in the world would ever know! When teaching kids English and getting to know them, they look up to you. And I was reading in the Bible that we should be in the shadow of Jesus and be a light in the darkness. And teaching kids in a dark place was an opportunity to do so.

Also, through the school, the local believers and I were able to connect and encourage each other. The global body of Christ is amazing! The Lord is moving in Southeast Asia!

Play Games, Eat Ice Cream, Drink Coffee, and Share the Gospel

University Pioneer

IMB job #: 26610
Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Team size: Team of 6
Field expense: $2,182 plus round trip airfare & required travel insurance

Job description: If you like to share the Gospel in many different ways such as sharing 1-on-1, playing sports, hosting activities/events, joining campus clubs, and many more ways.. then this is the summer job for you! Bangkok is a city with more than 15 million people. University students make up almost 1 million of those people. Most of these students have never heard the true story of Jesus. There is currently some amazing work taking place at a few universities but we would like to expand to more campuses. This is an opportunity to go to a new campus to share with those who have never heard and find students who are seeking to know more.

Student Testimony from Thailand:
We have been really investing in a couple really good relationships here. A few of my teammates met a group of students and ate with them the first day we were on campus. Since then we have met up with them multiple times. We have gone out to eat, and get ice cream; they even came to our apartment to play games. While they were at our apartment we were able to share the gospel with them. It has been amazing to see how God has opened up doors in our conversations to be able to talk about Him and the Word.

Strongholds Made of Sand

"Behold he comes…prepare ye the way of the Lord!" Thailand is a beautiful country with some of the kindest people I have ever met. They believe not in the King who is coming soon, instead, they use their lives to build and receive merit based on morally “good” things done, money given to temples, and prayers to a golden buddha. Bangkok has a population of roughly 8 million people and university students alone make up 1 million of the population. The heart-breaking truth of the Thai culture is still less than 1% of Bangkok is following Christ.

As our team witnessed to Thai university students over the past month, we saw how Buddhism holds to their hearts. This tight hold is not easily broken. So, seeing several Christians meeting on campus was so encouraging! Meeting Christian students was an amazing opportunity. And while we did not personally witnessed any salvations while there, I can rest assured knowing we tilled the soil, removed some stones, and helped prepare the way of the Lord.

Adjusting to the culture was easier (after other deployments) but the language was difficult and, to be honest, walking around the towering temples was terrifying. As I was walking around a certain temple, I saw a woman kneeling before a 15-foot-tall, golden Buddha. At that moment, I began to pray and I remembered how at the 2nd coming of Christ, these temples and statues will melt and crumble like sand before the King of Glory.

University Outreach

Our ministry in Thailand was exactly how I expect my college experience to be but without the classes (haha). We walked around a Thai university, talked to students and made many connections. This is what our 4 weeks in Bangkok looked like:

Week 1: we sought to make connections
Week 2: we developed the relationships
Week 3: we shared the Gospel
Week 4: we followed up with our new friends

I was sad we only had 1 month with the university students, but I know God has a plan for the seeds we planted.

Fight for Joy

The night before leaving for our one month deployment, I became ill. Because I already deal with chronic health issues, I was very discouraged during travel and our first week of ministry.

I still wasn’t feeling well and kept thinking, “why am I enduring through all of this when I could just go home, and it’d be so much easier?” It made me go through my day without joy. Because of my lack of joy, I wasn’t the best teammate to have.

However, my teammates showed patience and kindness. They did not judge me but took me aside, prayed for me, and looked for ways they could encourage me. They had empathy and showed me Christ’s love and compassion. They also wrote me notes and encouraged me as I taught English. They helped me see that fighting for joy is so worth it! They kept reminding me of God's word in Hebrews 4:14-16; Christ knows what I’m going through! He went through it as well, and He is not far from me in my trials. I was also able to share with some youth about the reality of my trials with my health and how I have seen God’s goodness even in sickness.

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." Hebrews 4:15-16

The Dark Places

I love seeing how the Lord is working and what He is doing all over the world.

In my last ministry area, I met many people who were the first believers in their people group. They are now being trained to take the Gospel back to their homes! I was able to witness the Bible being translated into languages that have never had a Bible. I was around people who continued to chase after God, despite the persecution they faced for it.

I wish I could list all the ways I saw God working. I see that God has His eye on the dark places. I see it in the many ways He is working in the lives of the nationals and in the way He is calling His people, from all over the world, to work here and be a Gospel witness. It is so exciting to be a part of it all!

Missing Home Ramblings...

know that when you are praying for the workers in the field… we have hard days.
days when missing your own familiar culture and people is overwhelming.
days when you are tired of constantly translating signs and conversations.
days when you miss the retreat you left across the world.

pray for these things knowing that workers struggle with these things. it is unexplainably difficult to live in a different culture. from food, language, music, people, all the things…

however, it reminds me of what a glimpse of heaven will be like… hearing all peoples singing in their heart language for the glory of the Creator God. And through these difficulties, this truth pulls me out of the homesick ball I’m curled up in…
