Man of Sorrows

This past weekend, several organizations in Mississippi came together to worship and talk about missions opportunities. One of the first songs that we sang was "Man of Sorrows" by Hillsong, and all that I could think about was this room at 6AM. 

Many mornings last summer, my team and I sat at this table and sang that song after our quiet time before we began our day. It is a beautiful description of the Gospel and something that we desperately wanted to be able to convey in our place for the summer.

As students begin the processes of summer missions, be in prayer for those who will serve in their hometowns and who stay within the States sharing the Gospel, and also pray for the ones who will go far away, to unknown places and unreached people groups. Pray that they too will know the beauty of this message and share it with courage.

Why I LOVE Nehemiah Teams

I love Nehemiah Teams so, so much because it is so gospel-centered. Before Nehemiah Teams and before reading Preach and Heal written by Dr. Charles Fielding, I always thought, “One day, I’m going to work in a clinic somewhere and people will be healed. Then, before they go home, I’ll share the gospel with them.” 

Now, after Nehemiah Teams, I just want to share the gospel. 

I love nursing so much. The hospital is one of my favorite places to be. I know that the Lord has given me this passion for a reason, and I will use it for His glory. However, Nehemiah Teams and Preach and Heal taught me that it is not about nursing (or any other profession). It is about relationships. It is about people loving others. It’s about sharing the truth of the gospel so that the lost can know about Jesus Christ, who took the punishment for the entire world’s sin to restore our relationship with our heavenly Father. Yes, lost people need physical healing, but more than anything, the lost need to understand the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ. 

I’ve been on too many mission trips where we go, paint a handful of houses- maybe even build a house, and then pray for the family at the end. I’m all for showing the love of Christ, but if the lost aren’t presented with the gospel, what are we doing? 

It upsets me to think about all the times I have gone on mission trips, displayed the love of Christ, and left it at that. Yes, they experienced Christ’s love, but did they understand that their faith in Jesus can save them from their sins by seeing my actions? That’s quite a stretch. 

Both NT and Preach and Heal provided motivation to be bold in sharing openly with people I encounter. Nehemiah Teams and field supervisors went above and beyond in teaching ways to present the gospel effectively and giving resources to do so. I wholeheartedly support NT and strongly believe that it is a vessel that the Lord will continue to use.

We Must Show them the Way

Tonight, this place has once again been on my heart. Some days, I think of a memory or two but lately I've missed it so much!

I thought specifically about these precious girls tonight and the sisters that they became over the summer.

I am so proud of Alyssa, Myra, and Mae as they continue to follow the Lord. I remember their baptisms as if it happened yesterday, and I am so excited to see what the Lord is doing in the lives of my teammates, Ate Alex and Allison. He is truly such a good Father, and He is fighting for His children every day. 

My mentor described to the team her experience in the Philippines in the best way possible. She said that she looked and saw so many people who wanted to serve God, and they just didn't know how to get to Him. These girls are just one of the many examples of the work that He will do if we show them the way.

Meet Annie!

Meet Annie. I called her Ate Annie all summer. (Because when you call someone 'Ate' in the Philippines it means that she is your big sister and it is a sign of respect!)

Ate Annie showed me so much... Her love and desire to follow Christ is like none other I have seen. She helped change my passions, my desires, and how I look at everyday life. She is full of wisdom and Christ's love!!

I found JOY

This summer I found JOY
...in the little things, joy in the big things, joy in the easy and in the hard, joy in trusting the Lord with my whole life, joy in climbing mountains and having children climb on me, joy in taking a tiny boat across to an island, and joy in the simplicity of the way of life in the Philippines.   There aren't words to describe my summer serving the Lord in the Philippines, all I can say is I want to go back!

Power of Prayer

Today is my last day here in the Philippines... The summer has flown by and tomorrow morning I will start my journey home. First to Alabama and then home to Texas!

Last update I told you all about Nanay Charita, (she has had a stroke and is paralyzed on her left side.) My team and I have gone up to see her everyday since the first hike up the mountain, the paths have become familiar and we don't get too lost. We have loved the hike everyday, to see God's creation and to explore. I have only fallen once, on a rainy day and got covered head to toe in mud, every hike is worth it to see Nanay and her family. 

Its really hard to put the next part of the story into words. The first time we went to Nanay Charita's house we laid hands and prayed for the Lord to heal her. We prayed that if it was in the Lord's will, that he would heal her. The next day we climbed the mountain and entered the clearing of her house, I could see her smile from 100 feet away, as we approached her smile only got bigger. I didn't know what to expect. Kuya Nonoy said hello, and she began to tell him something, we sat quietly behind him. When he turned around, he had a face of shock, Nanay was able to WALK!! She said that she walked around that morning, something she had not been able to do since the stroke.

God is our healer. A women paralyzed can now walk, she had no medical help or treatments, just prayer. He healed her. He is powerful, and I'm continuously amazed at his power and grace.

Please pray for safe travels, and good health during travel.

Thank you for all your prayers, this summer has been amazing, the Lord has been at work, and your prayers have been an encouragement and comfort knowing I have each of you behind me praying and praising God for all he has done.

For Our Prayer Warriors

The two Bicol teams are about to head into their last stretch of ministry and here is how you can pray for each person specifically: 

Austin: Pray that he will remained focused on his mission this last week. Pray that heads of households will be convicted to follow Jesus. 

Kuya Nonoy: Pray that he will continue this last week with the passion to seek the lost. Also, pray that God will raise up leaders in the barangay. 

Rachael: Pray for her as she prepares and thinks about tangible ways to be a World Christian on her campus at home. Also pray for their 9 a.m. bible study conversations to lead to their honest questions.

Jadon: Pray for God to lead him to the place that he will be a missionary. 

Cloe: Pray for her knee pain, as she has to hike up a mountain to get to her afternoon bible study. Pray for leaders to leave the started ministry with. Also, pray for Nanay C to be healed. 

Deanna: Pray for her to stay focused this last week. Pray for people to understand the true gospel. 

Ate Annie: Pray that she will continue to grow in love for God and for people. Also pray specifically for Kuya J and Ate J's family-that they will be firm in their faith.

Kason: Pray for leaders to continue to rise up in the barangay where he is serving. Pray for him as he determines his future after seeing what the Lord has done this summer. 

Bekah: Pray for her to focus on the mission. Pray for Ate E to continue to grow and become a leader despite persecution, Nanay G's eyesight to be completely healed, and for Kagawad (Counselor) J & R to come to put their faith in Christ. 

Allison: Pray that she will remained focused this last week. Pray for endurance and for her team as they are trying to form a house church. Pray for the people in her barangay to continue to understand the truth of the Bible, despite what they have been taught their whole lives. 

Kuya Glads: Pray that he will remain healthy this week. In this next week, pray for the formation of a house church in the barangay. Pray for him as he joins a traveling team after this summer is over. He will spend 6 months traveling throughout the Philippines to help mobilize churches. 

Ate Alex: Pray for her this next week as she is dealing with wisdom teeth pain. Pray for healing and that she can endure this next week as she translates. Pray for guidance as she finishes this summer; she's not sure what is coming after finishing Nehemiah Teams. 

Carson: Pray that he will see God's love more and more in his daily life. Also, pray that the hearts of the teenagers in his barangay will continue to soften.

The Final Stretch

We’ve been in M'long for two weeks now. It has it’s challenges– All seven of us cram into an 11 x 11 house and our bathroom situation is a little bit different, but we have also been blessed with electricity and can have fans while sleeping and a light when it gets dark! 

We have several Bible studies set up, and things are going well! We are going into our last week starting tomorrow, and we’ll have around 7 or 8 days and then the summer is basically over. I can’t believe it’s starting to come to a close already. It’s flown by, yet dragged by at the same time. We all have conflicting emotions–excitement about coming home and seeing family and sadness about leaving the Philippines. But for now, we’re trying to stay focused on our ministry so we can make the most of the time we have left. 

We are all learning so many lessons about grace. With this being the second half of the summer, we are all completely exhausted–both physically and emotionally. But it’s during our weakest moments and days that God shows us that it’s not about us, but Him. Because He moves anyway, even when we are struggling the most. 

As far as prayer requests, please continue to pray for health... we’re all pretty tired. We’ve also experienced some spiritual warfare. Pray for us to be strengthened physically & spiritually. 

Continue to pray for the people in this village– God is moving, but there are still strongholds from the strict Roman Catholic religion. A common response we hear from people when asked how you get to heaven is, “Do good works and pray.” Just pray that they will be able to rest in the Gospel and that Christ is all they need to be justified before God.

Paul's Mindset

"And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there."  Acts 20:22

What obedience and faithfulness! Paul understood the reality of the task at hand and the importance of the task. How different this world would be if we were not so caught up with ourselves and truly gave our life to Christ-gave up our desires, our "needs," our dreams, and truly lived with the attitude of Paul. He considered his life worth nothing and the only way to have value was by being obedient to the Lord's command of testifying to the gospel of God's grace. That was the only thing that gave him value-not a job, not his family, not his looks, not the size of his house, not his level of his education, no stuff gave him any value. His obedience gave him value. 

After the Lord appeared to him on the road to Damascus, his life no longer belonged to him, but it was the Lord's. God truly was his Lord, his master and his ruler. No, Paul was not worried about things of this world. He delighted in his sufferings, in his singleness, and in the Lord, who loved Paul (and all of us) and gave Himself for him (and the rest of us). If he was going to be imprisoned-great! If he was to be a martyr-even better! He never stopped, nothing would or could ever stop him. He didn't care about safety. He cared about souls. Imagine the impact we could have by emptying ourselves and being filled only with the love and desires of the Father?

Father, give me your heart for souls. Help me to not see people, but to see eternal beings.

Missionary MMA

I have a new hobby: wrestling. I've had lots of practice this summer. I might even consider myself a professional. Hey, maybe I have a future in the women's MMA after I return to the States? I had not tried it much before coming to the Philippines, but people here love to wrestle. Many people invite us into their homes not realizing that a wrestling match is coming, but many times, that is the outcome. My team has won many matches this summer, and we are all becoming more comfortable with the idea. I hope the rest of my team will leave the Philippines much stronger after a summer of wrestling, because I know I will.

Okay, we aren't actually physically wrestling, but we are definitely spiritually wrestling. Before I go any further, I would like to say that my team has not won any matches by ourselves-those victories are only credited to the Holy Spirit for working in the lives of many people that were hungry and yearning for the truth. Wow, have we had some good long and hard fights! There is nothing more energizing than hearing someone say that their works will forgive them of their sins, and then after a long, hard match hearing them say that they only need faith in Jesus Christ. With no tools other than the armor of God, especially the belt of truth, we walk in to every match confident and expectant to see the Holy Spirit work in their lives. Have we won every match? No, but we presented them with the truth and that's all we can do; it's not our job to persuade them. We trust the Holy Spirit will do that in the right time.

We are simply obeying 1 Peter 3:15 which says, "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." 

I don't know what I thought this summer was going to be like. I guess I thought it was going to be all sunshine and roses and people were just going to accept what the Bible said. I was wrong. It's definitely a process for someone to accept that they only need faith in Jesus when they have been deceived their whole lives and told that they must pray certain prayers and must do good works. But WOW, the look on their faces when they truly understand. There's no greater feeling than to hear them denounce their old belief and say "pananampalataya"- FAITH!

Follow the Arrow

Romans 5:20 says that "grace abounded all the more..."  this week I have seen his grace pour out onto my team and the people of Masalong Salong.

This week our team went to a new location in the Philippines. We are now in a barangay  (village) that is a coastal region of Bicol. We are living in very tight quarters, and this week has presented several new challenges. But the Lord has taught us that even in the discomfort of our new 10' x 10' house, the adventure of seeking after His will is what brings us closer to Him. 

I never thought that I would find myself at a literal crossroad in life where I would be solely relying on the Spirit to direct me. I certainly never thought that such a crossroad would appear in the middle of a jungle with one path leading up a mountain and another path leading across a river.

This past Monday was an adventure like no other. After a discouraging week of no Bible studies we decided to "go where no one had gone" to share the gospel. That afternoon we set out with a very simple plan, we would stop by the houses of the people that we had met and ask if they would like to study the Bible.  If they were still uninterested we would hike to the mountain in search of those who were. 

On the way we met a man and sat to chat for a little while. We took his blood pressure, and shared with Him the story of Jesus. As we shared the gospel with him, with kind smiling eyes he nodded as we began to talk about God's grace. He was a fellow brother in Christ who was placed in our path to give us direction for our journey to the mountain. He said that there was one house about an hours hike away. With gentle warning he told us that it would not be easy to find. He would have been right if we did not have the Spirit to guide us. 

We came to a river and awkwardly clambered across. There we met some locals who shook their heads and said that there were no houses on the mountain. We went on anyway. In the words of Kuya Nonoy, "We are not looking for houses." We were on an ordained search for lost souls. 

As we went on our way we came to a resting point and Kuya Nonoy noticed some water buffalo, which are called caribou here. As we came upon them we met a man who directed us 1km up the mountain. He said there were people there. He sincerely wished us a good trip, and we bid him "Magadang Hapon" (good afternoon). Yet again, at a literal T in the road God placed an individual in our path with a smiling face to lead us. 

The path grew narrow and the trees became increasingly dense. As our hike approached an hour we came to a split in the trail. Rachael was in front and turned back to ask the team which direction to go. We grinned and said, "Let's follow the arrow..." Sure enough, nailed to a tree in the middle of the jungle was a wooden sign pointing to the left. 

We walked on and only a few moments later came upon a clearing where we spotted what we immediately knew we were looking for! We stopped briefly to pray and hesitantly walked towards the two sided house. There were two women there. One woman named Nanay Charita was paralyzed due to a stroke she had recently had. They invited us in. 

With confused looks they asked what we were doing, and we explained that we had come to help with medical needs and teach about the Bible. We took her blood pressure and it was alarmingly high. We prayed for her, and I presented the gospel to her and her daughter. When I asked if they would like to pray to accept Jesus as their Savior they nodded their heads in unison. 

On that mountain side, with mosquitoes buzzing around us, those two women bowed their heads and prayed in Tagolog to ask Jesus to be their Lord and Savior. He is El Shaddi, the Lord God Almighty. There is no mountain too high, or river too wide to stop His gospel from reaching the ends of the earth.

Please pray for the people in our current barangay.
Please pray for Nanay Charita and her health. 
Pray that the Lord would be glorified in our last two weeks of ministry here in the Philippines.

They Got it

The part of this past week that was absolutely amazing happened during a 9 AM Bible study that we only set up with one woman. She told us that she was very Roman Catholic, but basically accepted every religion as truth. What sparked her interest was the 10 commandments. When she realized that the commandments in the Bible were a little different from the ones she learned in church her whole life, she became very interested. 

The next day, we had a Bible study and discussion with her, and then our translator Annie got into a really good conversation with her and her friend who was there as well for about half an hour. Then we said our goodbyes, not knowing what exactly had happened except that she had prayed to receive Christ. I talked with Annie and asked what they had discussed for so long, and what she said blew me away. 

Praising God that "they got it!"

Annie explained that the two women believed in Jesus and believed that they were sinners, but they believed they were condemned to Hell; they thought it was in God’s will. They believed that Jesus died for sins, but that He only died for past sins and not present or future ones. Annie had to explain the Gospel to them four times, but they got it. They understood that their futures didn’t have to be Hell. Their hopelessness was transformed into the truest form of freedom you can have. Because God’s love for us brings hope to the hopeless. I will never forget that moment.

Mabuti ang Dios! (God is Good!)

Today we left our first site and we will not return to Apuao. It was one of the hardest things to do. To walk away (or float away on a boat in my case), knowing that there is still work to be done. While on the boat, I found comfort in knowing that God is greater than us. He will stay and work on the island. He isn't leaving and He is still working. His task will be complete, we were just there for a little while. Later this week my team and I will head to a new village. 

The past two weeks have been so amazing... to see how God is working in the village. In our morning Bible study we were in a community area where many different families came to hear the stories we taught each day from the Bible. They have started to open up to us, as time goes on. They have shared their struggles and praise to the Lord. 

In August they may not be able to go and fish (their only source of income) because the waves may be too big. If this happens they won't eat, they could starve. Even though this is the reality of their lives, they are the most compassionate, loving, and generous people I have ever met. They have the most genuine community, making sure that everyone has eaten. Even when they don't have much they share! Everyone gets a portion, no matter how small. 

We were sad to leave them, but again their generosity amazed me. They made us lunch, a soup of coconut milk, banana, and root crops... so masarap (delicious)! 

Many of the people in this community have accepted Christ, and we have seen true heart change. Every Bible study we would ask them if they have any prayer requests. One morning a man spoke up and said "I want to pray for the people around the world who have not heard the Good News that you have shared with us, and for people to go to them as people have come to us." The Lord is working in this village, wow. They are so eager to learn more about Jesus.

Please pray for our team as we deal with all the emotions of leaving the island, and for the Lord to continue to move in the village.
Pray that my team and I will get so much needed rest over the next few days!

What Have I Gotten Myself Info???

It’s hard to believe we’ve been here for 18 days already. This summer has been filled with so many moments of “What have I gotten myself into??” For example: 

• Riding over two hours squished into a van from Naga City to Daet barely after arriving in the Philippines over a mountain nicknamed “the intestines of a chicken”. With no translator. And a driver who kept turning around while we had no idea what was going on and no way to find out. 
• The first morning in our village as I realized we were staying in a house on an island that is 45 minutes away by boat with no electricity and bugs literally all over the place. 
• Realizing that I’ll probably never sleep all the way through the night this whole summer and will wake up at least 3 times during the night or lay awake for 3 hours more often than not. 
• Hitting the shock of the sheer amount of people who live in even smaller cities. 
• Being awakened by the sound of a rat chewing on our bed platform. 
• Reaching the point of utter exhaustion in on the 2nd week.

But then moments show me what we have actually gotten ourselves into. 

• We are learning that when we are weak, when we are tired, when we are sick, God moves all the more. 
• We are learning more and more that this summer is not about us. 
• We are becoming more bold in sharing the Gospel and are gaining a sense of urgency in doing so. 
• We are meeting beautiful people with even more beautiful and generous hearts. I honestly feel like I am in a dream 99% of the time when we are sitting surrounded by these people in this place–It doesn’t feel real. God is slowly ripping out my selfish heart and replacing it with a new and grateful one.

This week, at least 8 more people accepted Christ. We only have a week left in this village, so we are trying to be more and more intentional with them. Some Bible studies are growing, and some are shrinking, but both are an answer to prayer because the people who are genuinely interested are the ones showing up. 

So prayer requests: We have an increasing need for strength that goes beyond us. 
Most of all, prayers for the people that we have such a short time with are needed–prayers that they would realize that the salvation we talk about with them every day is a free gift that only they can accept. No one else can accept it for them.

God Knows His Name

I want to introduce you to some of my friends. These precious boys follow us around the village everyday. They are full of joy, and their smiles are contagious. The boy on the left has captivated my heart. He is deaf and mute, and has grown up seeing the world full of people and not knowing or understanding why they have rejected him. I don't know his name, but I know that our Heavenly Father does. I don't know how to share the gospel with him aside from loving him, and caring for his medical needs in a way that is Christ like.  
Please pray for him.
Pray that God would reveal Himself to him.
Pray that he would know that he is loved and a beautiful child of God.

Prayers for a Relationship

Bible study at Ate's!

Heavenly Father,
Like Cornelius, there are so many people in our village who are faithful to pray and do great deeds for you, but so many of them are missing the relationship. They are missing the faith. As we go back out today and begin to minister this week, I ask that You help us to show them commitment to you. Through both what we say and what we do this week & the rest of the summer, help us to show them what a relationship with You means and looks like. I pray for hearts hungry for You and for people who desire to be committed to knowing You. I ask for consistency and devotion in our Bible studies and for the heart changes. Help us to share with Your words and not our own and to be more than just the fascinating Americans, but dedicated believers of Christ and teachers of Your Word. Keep us all safe, healthy, and give us strength, and wisdom to know what You want. Thank You for all that You do. I love You and praise You.  Amen

Granted Life

Of all the great stories we could tell, the most important one is that people are being granted life. Many are no longer dead in their sins, but through faith, they are alive with Christ. Saturday night is our youth night. After the story of creation, explaining how God desired a close, personal relationship as Adam and Eve had in Eden, and explaining the outcome of sin... eleven teenagers confessed their sin and put their faith in Jesus. You could see it in their eyes. After giving them time to pray, the moment they looked up you could see their thankfulness and excitement after heart that Jesus took their place on the cross.

Pray for these new believers to continue in the growth & relationship with Jesus Christ

Island Urgency

With two weeks down, the Island Bicol team has one week left before changing ministry sites. With multiple Bible studies throughout the day, they know that at least 9 lives have been changed and given to Christ. Praise the Lord!! There are also many people left to follow up with. As they have 5 days left, the team is heading back out with a sense of urgency as they disciple and communicate the need that everyone has for Christ. 

Keep the following things in your prayers this week:

• For the villagers to realize that their true provision comes form God, not from the fish they catch for a living, the church they attend, or the priest they listen to 
• Leaders to rise up for when they leave 
• Team unity

Island life is treating Deanna (and the rest of the team) really well.

Pray for healing as many have extremely high blood pressure. 

Pineapples, Caribou, and Life in Christ

Week two of ministry is complete and God continues to show His faithfulness, that He is watching over us, and that He is a God that is worthy of our praise. Our village continues to welcome us with open arms. We are constantly given gifts of fresh pineapple, mangoes, and bananas, and we are often given at least one (if not more than one) merienda, which is a mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack. Don't worry people... we are being well fed.

If you get the opportunity to ride a caribou, take the opportunity.

One of our persons of peace brought us along to his farm Thursday morning, and we had a nice morning of adventure. We hiked through beautiful rice fields and pineapple fields before making it to his farm. We met all of his chickens and pig before he led us to his caribou (water buffalo). It had no name so we named her Amy (after Amy Carmichael) and the girls rode her across the field on the way to Tatay's favorite waterfall. We splashed in the waterfall, dove into the river, and had sweet fellowship with Tatay all morning. Because Tatay is THE man, he brought his supplies to cook us rice and steamed fish. As if that wasn't enough, he offered to get us coconuts and pineapple to add to our picnic. This was 100% a Filipino picnic, as we ate with our hands off a banana leaf plate. As we headed back to the village, the boys took their turn to ride Amy. It was full of laughter. Pray for Tatay, specifically that he will continue to hunger for the Word and potentially be a leader after we leave.

Join us in our ministry by praying for the following:
-Healing: Nanay G's eyesight, Tatay and M to recover from physical ailments
-Ate B: married for 4 years and has not been able to get pregnant
-Potential leaders for when we leave at the end of the summer
-Body of believers to form a house church before we leave
-Village captain to come to know the Lord, for she could have a great influence in the town
-11 teenagers that accepted Christ
-Children will be able to see Christ through us as we share stories and love on them
