The End Has Come

This summer we’ve spent a total of 29 days on a total of 4 islands. We’ve each hiked over 100 miles and have spent countless nights in the homes of the village people. Some houses were decent but most of them were a little less than nice. Regardless. God provided a place to sleep and a meal to eat every single night. For that, we give all the glory to Him whose promise has never return void.
The Lord has taught each of us something different, this summer, and those teachings have allowed us to bring Him more glory through our daily lives. As you may have known the six of us guys were split into two teams. One team went to a small island to the north both trips and the other went to a larger island to the south on the first trip and to the northernmost tip of this island on the second trip. Once we arrived at our respective locations, we tightened our Chacos and buckled our packs and headed to find people of peace who needed to hear the Gospel.
The Northern team was able to hike fully around the island the first trip. They were able to chart the villages and the people groups as well as meeting many people of peace and sharing the Good News on countless occasions. Every person they came in contact with were Cousins with animistic beliefs. It became discouraging that they didn’t meet any believers, but through perseverance they pushed onward, planting seeds of the Gospel in every village.
On their second trip, they had a few extra media members hiking alongside them. However, this never shifted their focus or goal. They visited a few of the houses they stayed in, the first time, to follow up on life and, of course, the Gospel. They traveled around doing this for about five days before the media team had to leave. After dropping the media team off at the port, they hiked five hours and nearly fifteen miles to reach this village that they had to bypass to make it around the first time. As they walked closer towards the city, a large Hindu temple was positioned to the right as you entered. They asked the men if they could go inside and look at it, surely enough they agreed and began to explain what all the statues meant. That afternoon, in the middle of the only Hindu temple on the island, the Gospel was taught to both a Hindu man as well as a Cousin.
They walked to the next village, where they were taken to a house out in the woods. As they walked into the front yard, a woman came out saying, “Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Please come in!” They were in the house of the only Christian family on the entire island. The rest of the night was spent telling stories, praying and encouraging each other. The next morning we all sat in the floor in worship, singing songs and reading the Word of God. They soon learned that this was the first time that they have worshipped with other believers in over a year. Encouragement, for them and for us, was found in this place and which we’ll be forever grateful of.
The Southern team’s first trip was to a large island about five hours from home base. Their trip consisted of walking to and from villages, meeting folks from all walks of life, building relationships and sharing the Gospel. They were able to share multiple times with many people. Their team suffered setbacks left and right, once one team member started recovering from illness, another would begin to feel worse.
Not too long after returning from the first trip, one of the team members had to be evacuated out of the country to seek medical attention. By the grace of God, he has fully recovered and is back with us today. He did, however, have to miss the second trip, but he took hold of every opportunity to share from a hospital bed hundreds of miles from where we were.
On the second trip, the Southern team took a truck 9 hours from home base to the northern tip of this island. They still had the same plan of action, hike, pray, eat, share the Gospel, and this is exactly what they did. The hikes were long and the weather was hot, so at the end of the day they all were exhausted and ready for bed. But God had other plans for them; instead of sleeping they stayed up talking about life, talking about American culture, and talking about the God who saves. They were able to meet many people of many trades, some carpenters or blacksmiths, others farmers and fishermen. From their jobs, connections to the Bible were shared, whether it is about Jesus being a carpenter or Peter and the fishing boat. God never fails in revealing Himself through the simplest things of every day life.
Everyone has arrived back at base camp and is starting to process everything that has happened this summer. All the people that we’ve met, all the things we’ve seen and most importantly, all those who’ve heard the Gospel of God’s grace. In one week, we will be boarding a plane bound for America, a place of many luxuries. There’s a part of me that wants to go home, but then there’s a part that wants to stay and go back out to share more and more, to keep encouraging those who believe.
Pray for those who live and serve here, pray that their work may not return void. Pray for all the people who have heard the Gospel, pray that the Holy Spirit will be working inside their hearts to ignite a fire for Jesus Christ. Pray for the Christians here, currently more than 80% of the country is fasting to a false God, but give them boldness and perseverance to endure the hardships of living in a country without great community. And lastly, pray for all those fasting; pray that the Lord will reveal Himself to them and that they will not keep what they experience to themselves but that they will share it with everyone!

Mid Summer Update From the Pulau Pulau

On Monday, we all returned from the islands that we've been on for the past 3 weeks. Brian, Travis, and myself were on a small island to the north and Andrew, Evan, and Christopher were on a bigger island to the south. We're so thankful that the Lord blessed us with good health and great conversations.

As for Brian, Travis, and I we arrived in the port city mid-afternoon and instantly we stole the show. Adults and children alike stopped what they were doing for the day and came to watch us. Some of the kids were standoffish, but ten minutes later they were following us, giving us high fives, and having a great time. We tried to ignore the attention and prayed that these people would see past our white skin, but that they would see Christ in us.

A few days and a few blisters later we arrived in a smaller village where we met a very nice gentleman who spoke decent English. He entertained us and kept us occupied so much that it was hard to discern what we should spend our time doing. The next day we were invited to a wedding in the village, once again we hoped that we weren't going to steal the show with our fair skin.

After the ceremony it was party time, our translator ended up tell a few men that Travis studies music. Next thing you know he's on stage singing Our God and other worship songs at a Cousin wedding! This means at least 200 people heard about our God's love, grace and mercy. After Travis finished, a small elderly woman sang a song to us in her tribal language. The song was about when we came to the village, a light shone brightly to everyone that saw us. If that wasn't a God thing, then I don't know what is.

Our host in the next village was beyond friendly, not only did they fix us elaborate meals but they loved to sit down and talk. One night, there were nearly 4 generations of men ranging from 5 years old to 98 years old sitting in the room with us. Eventually the conversation started to go the spiritual route. I was able to share my testimony with these men and they listened with great intent and concentration. When it was over we asked if they have ever heard a story like that and the answer from each and every one of them was, "never."

All around the island, we built relationships and shared the Good News. Time and time again there were opportunities to hang out or just relax on the beach, but instead we chose to serve the Lord in all we do. If we strapped up the hammocks, we found a way to invite someone in it to hang out and talk. If we walked on the beach, we drew pictures in the sand. If we played soccer with the kids, we shared stories when we were resting. Towards the end of the trip, Brian started to come down with a cold. He had sinus drainage and was just dead tired. Despite his condition, he stayed up to talk about culture and ended up sharing. God truly opened doors in places we never thought possible.

About 200 miles south, Andrew, Evan and Chris arrived in the port city. They, just like us, experienced  the same attention for having white skin. The kids flocked to them time and time again. Their stories seemed to parallel what we experienced too, except for one thing. During their time in the port city, they met a language teacher who loved to talk. The guys spoke to this man for hours and shared multiple stories as well as the Good News. He wanted more, he was longing for more but they had to move on.

A couple days ago, we're all sitting at a restaurant, and they receive a phone call. It was that same man, who is spending some time in city and wanted to get together to talk. He came over to the house and, again, they talked for hours. He's so close to understanding and becoming a brother, there's just a few small important things that needs to be completely understood. Pray that God will continue working in this man's life.

Pray for the safety and health of everyone going out to the islands tomorrow and definitely pray for the hearts of the people that we'll come in contact with. Andrew and Chris will be headed to a new island and Brian, Travis, and myself will be returning to the same island and are hoping to do some follow up with the people we met last trip.

Off We Go

As you know, we arrived at base camp last Friday and had the weekend to acclimate to the culture and the humidity. Your clothes stick to your body all the time and there’s only one room in the house with an air conditioner. On Friday, a man came to the porch and Andrew and Evan were able to talk to him for an hour or so. It’s so awesome to already be in position to share the good news with nationals. The weekend has been a lot of fun too! We picnicked at the beach, went diving in the ocean, and shopped in the market.
It’s now time to get down to business, tomorrow morning Andrew, Evan and Chris will head about 5 hours south to a mountainous island, while Brian, Travis and myself will be headed north to larger city and then will head out to another island on Tuesday. We’ll be on the island for the next 3 weeks, so don’t expect any updates again until around the first of July. While we’re on the islands we’ll be exploring the jungles, summiting peaks and meeting villagers. Most of our time will be spent in the villages building relationships. Ask God to bless those conversations and encounters, and that opportunities will arise so that we’ll be able to share the good news.

Almost there! Please keep praying!

There's been a few common questions over the past three days,

 "Are we there yet?"
" How much longer until we board the plane?"
"Why is this line so long?"

After 3 days of living in an airport, we have almost reached "the end." Only two more plane rides separate us from our final destination, we are all ecstatic!
Once we touched down in the capital it became a mad dash to get through security, customs and more security. We met up with our the driver to our hotel and that's when most of us first experienced how absolutely terrifying traffic can be. I really thought we were going to run over a couple motorcyclists and a taxi cab, but somehow he got us to our hotel safe and sound.
We have to be back at the airport at 3 AM so a good night's rest is out of the picture. We're all in a daze and nearly fell asleep in our food at dinner. Please pray for God to give us energy, we would much appreciate it.

Please for..
  • Strength and Energy
  • Boldness and intentionality with our Cousins
  • To recognize the task that Dad has set for us more clearly.

Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you!
The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear Him!

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, "The righteous shall live by faith."
